7 Tips for the Best Sugaring Experience

Sugaring is a hair removal method that has been used over thousands of years. It dates back to 1900 B.C. The women applied a treatment similar to sugaring we all know about today.

This concept was passed along through generations. So much so that body hair removal became a custom and a very popular practice amongst modern women.

The Benefits of Sugaring

Nowadays, Sugaring uses eco-friendly products, and it is made from sugar, lemon, and water. The sugar paste only adheres to hair and dead skin, without breaking many hairs, leaving the skin soft and smooth.

The paste is warmed to body temperature so you’ll never be burnt or experience irritation, unlike waxing. The all-natural ingredients and the very gentle method used in Sugaring makes it the go-to option for men and women of all ages, skin types, and hair textures, even the most sensitive.

Our Expert Advice

Sugaring has a number of benefits. That said, it is important to take care of your skin on a regular basis to have a comfortable experience and avoid side effects.

To help you achieve the best results and experiences, we are sharing seven tips about what you can do before and after your Sugaring treatment to enjoy all the advantages and the most pleasant experience.

1. Exfoliate

Regular exfoliation of your skin makes a huge difference. Try to exfoliate two to three times a week to remove dead skin cells. This will prevent stray hairs from being left behind during Sugaring. It will also reduce the chances of getting ingrown hair in-between appointments.

You can exfoliate while taking a shower and simply using scrubbing gloves or towels, or do an enzyme and chemical exfoliation for a deeper cleanse. Do not exfoliate 24 hours prior to your appointment as well as after. Contact us to see what in-clinic skin treatment is available.

2. Regular Treatment

Your first sugaring treatment will last around 3 weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows back. That is why we advise our clients to set an appointment every 4 weeks for the first 3 sessions. Afterward, you can come back every 4-6 weeks.

Sugaring is not a permanent hair removal method, but if you keep your regular appointments, you will find that the process becomes less painful and your hair grows back slower over time. Failure of doing so will disrupt the hair cycle and you will have to start the process from scratch.

3. Trim

The length of your hair is a crucial factor for the success of sugaring and your comfort. If it is too short, the sugar paste cannot sufficiently wrap around the hair. Whereas too long will cause unnecessary discomfort, particularly for those with wavy hair.

The optimal hair length is 0.5-1mm (the size of a grain of rice). If your hair is longer than 1.5mm, you may experience some tenderness. As such the first sugaring treatment is usually the most unpleasant.

In the case of shaving, the waiting period varies from person to person, but generally it is 8-10 days for armpit zones and 14 days for legs/arms and other parts of the body. If you have sugared or waxed, the wait is about 4-6 weeks.

Once sugaring is part of your monthly routine, you will not need to think about timing, and the pain will subside gradually.

4. Hydrate

Drink plenty of water every day, especially on the day of your sugaring treatment. The plumper your skin is, the easier it will be for your body hair to just pop through.

Also minimize your caffeine and alcohol intake to prevent your skin pores from tightening. As these substances make you dehydrated, always replenish with a glass of water.

5. Moisturize

Preparing your skin in between sugaring treatments is the key to the best results. When you exfoliate, you should also moisturize with a product that won’t clog your poles.

Before your appointment, however, shower without using any lotions and do not put moisturizer on the area that will be receiving treatment. After your treatment, we will apply an anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial lotion, so you do not need to do anything. If you have to, only use unscented, gentle lotions.

6. Clean

Following Sugaring, your hair follicles are exposed so they are more susceptible to infection. Refrain from touching the freshly sugared area with unwashed hands or dirty towels. And please avoid sexual activities (I understand it is more tempting!)

Wear loose clothing or bring them with you to change into after your treatment. It is necessary to take a shower and rinse off your lotion and deodorant before you come for your appointment.

7. Cool

Aftercare is just as important as preparation. Keep your body cool and let your skin breathe. Do not wear tight clothes for 1-2 days after sugaring as the fibers rubbing against each other can cause irritation. When doing a Brazilian, wear comfy, cotton underwear.

Sweat and friction can cause ingrown hairs, rashes, or infection; so avoid working out or doing any strenuous activity for 24 hours. It is the perfect excuse to relax and take it easy.

Stay away from hot tub, sauna, massage or anything steamy, as the treated area will be sensitive and more prone.

These tips are provided by our clinic specialists and other beauty experts across the world. Following these practices before and after your Sugaring treatment will ensure you have a more comfortable experience, and your skin will be soft and glowing, without any hair!
